How many builders begin work by demanding money upfront? For what reason?

I've previously shared my story about giving our landscaper £7000 in advance. Here’s a breakdown of the materials he used. Some prices are estimates, while others are what they told me.

Mini digger for a week: £350

Dumper for a week: £220

Patio slabs (40SM): £1000 (estimate)

Blocks x 240: £1000 (estimate)

Skip: £270

MOT/SAND: £750

Concrete: £700

Wood: £250

Shingle: £180

Total: £4,720 - Just £2280 profit on materials. Wow!!!

32% profit margin when you had not even started the job! My parents made the same mistake years ago, and I can't believe I didn't learn from it.

Now, I get it—some tradespeople ask for deposits because:

  1. They need to secure materials.

  2. They want commitment from the customer.

  3. They’ve had bad experiences with non-paying clients.

But here’s the thing—a reputable builder should be able to explain exactly why they need the money and what it’s covering.

If I get work from clients, I will never ask for money upfront. As mentioned on my About page, I plan to price jobs by providing a clear material breakdown. Since I'm starting out and not a cash-rich business—balancing this venture with a full-time job and a young family—I prefer my customers to purchase materials directly. This way, I never own them! I'll send the quote, and they can pay for the materials themselves direct with the supplier. This approach is all about transparency. Even if I do make money one day, I will still run my jobs in this manner. It is a win win for everyone in my opinion.

When someone demands money upfront without an extra amount without explanation, don't let excitement blind you. Anyone asking for money upfront is likely suspicious! I can't believe we handed over cash without verifying what it was for!
